About New Brunswick

• New Brunswick has had several prior names. During the 1600’s it was call Prigmore’s Swamp, Raritan Ford, Inians’s Ferry and finally in 1724 it was named Brunswick (later New Brunswick) in honor of King George I of England, who was also the Duke of Brunswick.
• The New Brunswick settlement was located on the Raritan River where it was navigable during both high and low tides which was excellent for shipping. This Settlement soon became an important agricultural shipping port of the American Colony. Every stream powerful enough to turn a mill wheel had its mill with many warehouses and inns built around them. In 1730, there were 6 mills operating in the area.
• The modern pinning’s of New Brunswick grew as the population grew.  In 1825, the Queens College (chartered in 1766) was renamed Rutgers College. From that point on, medical research, pharmacology facilities and many others continued the growth and industrial development.
• ​New Brunswick is made up of 11 neighborhoods. Civic Square is the downtown government district where most city and federal public buildings are located. College Avenue Campus including the Queens Campus of Rutgers University is one of the larger Universities in USA. The others are older residential neighborhoods with most homes built between 1862 and 1988: Edgebrook, Feaster Park, Fifth Ward, Lincoln Park, Livingston Avenue Historic District, Westons Mills and Raritan Gardens.

• The Rutgers university’s Ecological Preserve was developed in 1976 as an ecological teaching resource for the college and as a natural recreational area for the Rutgers community as well as for any who wish to visit
  
• .This Ecological Preserve is 360 acres of trails meandering through the habitat of migrant songbirds (warblers and towhees) and white-tailed deer. It serves as an outdoor laboratory, for Rutgers students to study native species of animals and plants. Studies of a Bat colony and Bee pollination within the reserve are an ongoing project for successive groups of students.
  
• Many people enjoy testing navigation skills while hiking the preserve and others enjoy the outdoor exercise while sticking to the trails- not worried about getting lost.  

East Jersey Old Town Village

• The Village is an ongoing renovation of original, replication and reconstructed 18th and 19th century buildings brought together to represent the farm and merchant communities, once found in central New Jersey. The Village represents or demonstrates the history, traditions, life skills and craftsmanship of the people who once lived and worked throughout the region. Public programs, exhibitions, concerts, storytelling sessions and theme-based projects take place throughout the year.
• 10 buildings have been brought into public use through historic renovations and restoration: They are New Brunswick Barracks, Runyon House, Vanderveer House, Fitzrandolph House, Smalleytown Schoolhouse, Farley Blacksmith Shop, Williamson Wheelwright Shop, Church of the Three Mile Run, Six mile Run House and the Indian Queen Tavern. While most of the buildings have been relocated to the site, others were constructed here. Stepping into the village is a lesson in history complete with an added dimension of sight and sound. Wonder of school children is encouraged with field trips into a replica village of our nation's past.
