Trenton New Jersey
- Trenton, the state capital of New Jersey, was established by Quakers in 1679. In 1719, the town adopted the name “trent-town”, after William Trent, one of the leading landholders at the time. Trent-town was later shortened to Trenton. - The "New Jersey State House” is the second oldest capitol in continuous use in the USA since 1792. Visitors can see the Governor’s office, restored rotundas, legislative chambers and caucus rooms on Saturdays during tours. Originally the building had a bell tower instead of a dome. After a fire in 1885, when most of the State house was destroyed the building was repaired and improved with the installation of a new 145-foot cast iron dome- weighing 205,640 pounds. The Latin phrase “Fiat Justitia Ruat Coelum” is written on the rotunda. It means “There must be justice even though the heavens fall.”
- The State House dome underwent a restoration from 1996 to 1999. The Gold Dome is covered with 48,000 pieces of gold leaf. Each piece of gold leaf cost $1.00 and was paid for with money raised by New Jersey school kids through the “dimes for the Dome’ program. The State formed an Old Barracks Museum in 1914 and continues to support it today.
- The First Battle of Trenton: December 26, 1776 General George Washington and his 2,400 Revolutionary soldiers, after crossing the icy Delaware River and marching to Trenton engaged the British in battle. Within an hour they captured the Barracks and nearly 900 Hessians (German mercenary troops hired by King George) with very few losses on the Americans side. The Barracks continue in control of the Americans despite 3 more attacks a week later- we beat back each successive attack. These battle wins encouraged the american revolution at a time that moral had been very low.
- Today the Old Barracks Museum is open for tours 10 am – 5 pm Monday – Saturday year-round. Many historical programs are offered to daily the public who are curious enough to be engage and inform about 18th century life in New Jersey to take a trip to the Museum.
