Why Use Asphalt For Pavement
Asphalt is a heated mixture of sand, crushed rock and bitumen. Bitumen is a sticky, black viscous liquid (200 times more viscous than Honey). It was first found naturally occurring in earthly deposits, called tar pits, then produced later as a byproduct of oil refinement. Tar was first used as an excellent sealant for boats (native Americans used it) and as a waterproof adhesive for roofing materials. Newark City, in 1870, placed large sheets of asphalt on the road in front of city hall. This road turned out to provide a solid rain repelling surface that easily encouraged the movement of goods and people. This early asphalt road was described by users as “the smoothest and quietest ride for wheeled, horse powered, conveyances- it even deadens the clip clop of the horses’ hooves.” The asphalt pavement industry, ever since, has been in constant innovation to make this product stronger, increase its lifespan and make it more environmentally friendly.

Commercial Asphalt Sealcoating
Periodic sealcoating primary purpose is to protect the pavement from ravages of sun, wind, and rain- all which ages the pavement to a light grey color. As the asphalt pavement becomes light grey, it loses flexibility and becomes brittle enough to start breaking up as vehicles are driven on it. Sealcoating, periodically, will keep flexibility in the pavement and stop pavement breakups for almost double the original expected lifespan of the parking lot. Most commercial asphalt paving companies suggest sealcoating every 2 to 3 years.

Tar and Chip (Pavement Parking Lots Driveways)

Finally , one or two layers of crushed stone will be spread on top of the hot asphalt and compacted down. The difference between gravel and crushed rock makes a difference to how well the surface will compact. Gravel, which is softer than crushed stone, is produced by natural processes of weathering or erosion and typically gives a rounded shape to the pieces. Crushed rock produces pieces with angular sharp surfaces. Angular rigid surfaces will allow the stones to be tamped, rolled or even vibrated into place until they lock down into solid stable surface, unlike rounded pieces of crushed gravel which won't lay together smoothly and lock down. Other positives are the many color choices in available in crushed rock and its low-maintenance because cracks can repair themselves when the tar heats up again in warm weather.

Located in Morrris County is the winter camp site “Jockey Hollow” of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. The Cooper Gristmill
The Cooper Gristmill in Chester Township within Morris County was built by Nathan Cooper in 1826. The mill’s water wheel powers gears, shafts and the 2 sets of 2,000-pound millstones to provide 800 lbs. of flour per hour. Today it’s a historical site with guided tours to explain the history and operation of the mill. The master miller dresses in period costume greats you at the mill pond to watch the guide start the water flowing into the flume to power the mill stones. Then follow the guide inside the mill building and watch as the water powers the Mills gears to turn the corn or wheat on the stone into cornmeal or flour. The Museum sells its own organic stone-ground flour and cornmeal to visitors for a small fee. It comes in an authentic flour sac with muffin and bread recipes printed on the bag. The mill is included as part of Black River Park- 578 acres of river, streams, meadow and woodlands dotted throughout with hiking trails.
