Why Use Asphalt For Pavement
Asphalt is a heated mixture of sand, crushed rock and bitumen. Bitumen is a sticky, black viscous liquid (200 times more viscous than Honey). It was first found naturally occurring in earthly deposits, called tar pits, then produced later as a byproduct of oil refinement. Tar was first used as an excellent sealant for boats (native Americans used it) and as a waterproof adhesive for roofing materials. Newark City, in 1870, placed large sheets of asphalt on the road in front of city hall. This road turned out to provide a solid rain repelling surface that easily encouraged the movement of goods and people. This early asphalt road was described by users as “the smoothest and quietest ride for wheeled, horse powered, conveyances- it even deadens the clip clop of the horses’ hooves.” The asphalt pavement industry, ever since, has been in constant innovation to make this product stronger, increase its lifespan and make it more environmentally friendly.
Commercial Asphalt Paving
Please give Jersey Strong Paving the opportunity to show how affordable it can be to preserve the value, appeal and integrity of your property with a free, no commitments, parking lot inspection. We can repair or resurface your ailing parking lot into a robust, long lasting and attractive parking lot that will inspire consumers to patronize your business. Sidewalks and pathways can also be designed and built to help drive and encourage foot traffic to your door. After all, roads and parking lots are a building’s Gateway, critical to the safety and overall impression of motoring users.
A Contractor’s poor grading of an Asphalt road, or parking lot will cause water infiltration under the pavement- the major preventable reason that asphalt pavements prematurely fail. The surrounding area of parking lot or road must be graded to guide rain or ground water away from pavement so it cannot erode the stable base. Also, insufficient gravel materials laid down, careless compaction of the layers in asphalt pavement system, cheap asphalt mix, and laying asphalt in cold or rainy conditions will build a weak pavement system that will most likely fail after a few years. These considerations are paramount during our design process and then correctly implemented to provide our clients with strong worry-free parking lots or roads..
Commercial Asphalt Sealcoating
Periodic sealcoating primary purpose is to protect the pavement from ravages of sun, wind, and rain- all which ages the pavement to a light grey color. As the asphalt pavement becomes light grey, it loses flexibility and becomes brittle enough to start breaking up as vehicles are driven on it. Sealcoating, periodically, will keep flexibility in the pavement and stop pavement breakups for almost double the original expected lifespan of the parking lot. Most commercial asphalt paving companies suggest sealcoating every 2 to 3 years.
Residential Asphalt Driveway Repairs
Asphalt Repairs- Asphalt is highly durable, but the driveways’ environment is constantly exposed to harmful elements, such as rain, frost, UV rays, traffic and chemical spills which over time wear down and decay the driveway. Maintenance is the key to extending the lifespan of driveways. Each Asphalt pavement fault has a specific repair recommended by industry specialists not only to correct the broken pavement issue but also its genesis. Just by looking at an ailing asphalt driveway, an experienced asphalt paver can tell right away what’s wrong. For example, a pavement upheaval is caused by swelling of the subgrade (the gravel base under the pavement). A frost heave is one example of this distress another the growth of vegetation within the subgrade. Just repairing the surface of cracked or broken asphalt pavement will not totally repair an upheaval its cause should also be addressed.
Residential Asphalt Driveway Sealcoating
We offer application of sealcoating to protect and waterproof asphalt pavement from the ravishes of UV rays, oil spills, gas spills and rain water- these are common oxidizers that slowly destroy the asphalt (the black glue that holds the crushed rock together). Sealcoating fills and smooths surface cracks and small dimpled areas of asphalt producing a non-porous surface where dirt and debris easily washes off.
Residential Asphalt Driveway Installs
New asphalt driveways can last 20 years or more when water is directed away from slipping under the pavement or from forming puddles on top. Aged Asphalt is a great recyclable material that can be used in a new asphalt mix to resurface and renew failing asphalt driveways rather than starting from scratch which keeps a renewable resource out of landfills. Sometimes, while repairing a badly deteriorated driveway the old asphalt can be ground up on site and used to strengthen the subbase before applying the new asphalt pavement layers.
Specialty Paving Services (Play Grounds)
Sometimes people will scoff at families that install play areas, such as tennis courts, basketball courts and playgrounds (mostly schools). However, consider the following: A parent takes an eight-year-old son to a Doctor’s appointment for a routine checkup and the Doctor ask the child “What did you do today?” the child replies “I picked up a hooker, stole a car and killed a cop.” Well you can imagine the embarrassing exclaim from the parent “What?” It was discovered that the boy was playing some car theft video game at the neighbors. Sometimes, it’s best to be the home where the neighbor children come to play. We can certainly help get you started on a play area project with a free consult for specialty paving services.
Tar and Chip (Pavement Parking Lots Driveways)
Jersey Strong Paving in Morris County also offers installation or repair of tar and chip pavement- a less costly yet durable option for residential, commercial and industrial clients. Tar and Chip driveways, parking lots and roads are built on site. Your Contractor will first apply a hot mix asphalt cement to a gravel base or an existing pavement (providing that is in good condition- meaning pot holes will need to be fix). Finally , one or two layers of crushed stone will be spread on top of the hot asphalt and compacted down. The difference between gravel and crushed rock makes a difference to how well the surface will compact. Gravel, which is softer than crushed stone, is produced by natural processes of weathering or erosion and typically gives a rounded shape to the pieces. Crushed rock produces pieces with angular sharp surfaces. Angular rigid surfaces will allow the stones to be tamped, rolled or even vibrated into place until they lock down into solid stable surface, unlike rounded pieces of crushed gravel which won't lay together smoothly and lock down. Other positives are the many color choices in available in crushed rock and its low-maintenance because cracks can repair themselves when the tar heats up again in warm weather.
